Build log, one of a kind 1932 Model B Truck raised garden bed

Post by Brian Millar » Sun Jul 15, 2018 6:43 am

Next on the chopping block, a Ford 1932 Model B truck raised garden bed. I am doing this build a bit more direct and by the book and adjusting the stock around it instead of the other way around. I will make concessions for the extensive rounded and curved areas, be it steam bending the stock is now something long over due to explore upon with but angle cut's are fine if it's too much to do upon being practical for this application.

I am giving credit where credit is due, leaving the diagrams in tact and are something that is free for the public to use as long as they get credit. Good job guys upon this one. I need to revise a lot to use it for this application but it's so nice to have something to start with rather then having to design the whole thing on your own on the computer.

From there, it's printing out the plans I modified and adjusted easily enough and then using carbon copy stock transferring it over to the stock so I can cut to size. This is a good time and testimony to the Ford lines as well as the people that lived in them, they wanted to work and they were looking for an affordable truck to get the job done in the process.

I made some progress along the engine compartment section, tying it in with the cab section, the bed section is not attached yet and all for a reason. Builds like this it's better to separate them unless you plan upon going into production upon which you would want to have everything pre done on the computer and that's another can of worms I am not getting into here. There is going to be a decent amount of sanding and rounding over when it's completed, but nice evening project to tinker around with. I still do not look forward to the fenders on this and have a few plans of attack upon, but for now enjoying the moment and build and will cross that bridge when I get to it. It is very hot right now so delegate this one to the evening hours when it's cool enough to feel comfortable but the trade off is that I am working under lights instead of sunlight.

Having the hood worked out was not too bad, there still is some shaping to do around it on the corners but it's starting to look much more like a truck now.

I got the base of the wheels on, I will be adding onto them a bit for several reasons, decorative and otherwise. Also got a bit more rounding in on the cab and hood. It's looking like a hot rod without the fenders the way it is.

I am getting close to the finishing touches upon it. I am gauging this type of project to making some decisions upon where to focus upon the final details and what to omit. I am not going to do fenders on it, it's nice enough on it's own and I like the hot rod type of look to it. This kind of a build it's part what to expect, part art, part when to know when that brush should put in it's last stroke and call it a completed piece.

I beefed up the wheels and got them cleaned up shape wise as well, next are headlights and bumpers. What I love about cedar like this, every angle is a different pattern of stock and look all together from it.

Adding the headlights gives it a bit more personality. Bumpers are next on this. A couple of tomatoes were ripe from my hobby garden, so showing the first fruits of it, be it humble.

It's about ready, fenders will be for another day upon it as mentioned before. Adding the bumpers really finishes it off too regardless. I am enjoying pushing the boundaries in this area, a raised garden bed doesn't have to be some box, or something that is just fitting in with what everybody else is doing, nothing holding you back from adding more creative pieces to give it further personality along the way. I hope sharing on this level will inspire others to also get into building more elaborate fun desgins.

I put on the last of what I am going to do on this project. I will post one more photo of it on location next.

Last photo's are in place, and on location showing some other of my builds. The airplane is a Cub, a design created in the 30's and the other truck is one of the earlier designs. The raised beds in the back are mainly country style, simple but effective for those wanting a basic raised garden bed and have something of quality without having to break the bank upon investment upon.

I want to thank Natures Beauty Garden Center, a company with heart that I've been doing business with for years and the operation that commissioned this piece.
